Bird's nest craft-toddler edition

I'm not sure I'm cut out for crafts with a toddler. No pun intended. I was reigning in some patience I'm pretty sure was supposed to be reserved for Wilder's teenage years. We'll get the hang of it, and it really was fun afterall.

I was inspired by her and her to do more crafty things with Wilder, as a way for us to bond over creativity and for him to learn. He was a good directions-follower and was so proud of the end result.

What is that? Is it a toupee, you say? Dirt? Chocolate?
(that face right there makes the mess worth it!)

No, it's a bird's nest with wee googly eyed birds inside (I should've bought larger pom poms or used a smaller plate--the nest is about to swallow them).
Click here to link to the project on Parents.com. You can see the pretty picture of what it's supposed to look like.

Bring the outdoors inside by creating a cozy new home for these adorable pom-pom birds.

Make it: Cut a paper plate in half and staple the rims together (leaving the top of the nest open). After your kids paint it brown, help them glue shredded brown paper onto the front to add texture. Create the birds by gluing three blue pom-poms to the ends of Popsicle sticks. Add googly eyes and orange paper beaks for a little personality. Have your kids slide the ends of the Popsicle sticks between the plates so the baby birds can rest inside their new nest -- and even pop up when they get hungry! source

Look at the tape on their eyes. I am a total cheater.

Either that or I have messy glue phobia.

What fun crafts are you doing with your babies?

Wilder looks like he really enjoyed making this. Look at his concentration, what a good little man. I have just discovered the 'I can teach my child' blog. She is one very clever and inspirational woman.

You are so funny! I can't believe he painted in such a cute shirt and didn't even make a mess. :-) Fun craft idea and Wilder did look like he was really having fun and concentrating hard. Love you!

This is super adorable!!! Rest assured you are not alone in the "mess making phobia" issue. I often have to remind myself that the messes can be cleaned up and it is good for my kiddos to be able to experience things, even if they are a little messy. :) I also feel like the two, very adorable, art smocks I just purchased at the Crayola Store are a nice compromise between the messy and my my OCD. Ha!

That's too fun! Think I will have to try that with Ben. Most of the time we color, paint with water and use scrap paper, old calendars and stickers to make "collages". I'd like to start doing more craft projects like this one with him. Just need to get organized - and over my "messy phobia"!

Juls,
we only had to paint the front of the plate plus a little on the inside, so, it didn't take long. those new melissa and doug brushes from you kept mess at bay...plus i may have sneaked and finished painting it for wilder...

Love it, love it. So fun. I bet you kind find all sort of fun stuff at estate sales to throw into a "craft box" for these situations.
